Vegetable-tanned full-grain leather is alive to light, oil and humidity. A little attention through the Indian monsoon keeps a piece going for decades.
Every week
Wipe with a dry, soft cotton cloth to lift dust from the grain and seams. Nothing else needed.
Every season
A pea-sized amount of neutral conditioner, worked in with a cloth in small circles, then buffed after 20 minutes.
After rain
Blot — never rub — with a dry cloth and let it dry at room temperature, away from sun, fans and heaters.
In storage
Keep in the cotton dust bag with a silica sachet, loosely stuffed, never sealed in plastic.
Understanding patina
Our hides are pit-tanned with bark liquors and left unpigmented, so sunlight and the oils in your hands darken them over months. Cognac deepens toward chestnut, chestnut toward espresso. Uneven darkening around pockets and handles is normal and permanent — it's the record of how you use the piece.
Monsoon and humidity
Humidity above roughly 70% can encourage surface mould on unconditioned leather. Air your bag or wallet for an hour every fortnight during the monsoon, keep a silica sachet in the dust bag, and avoid cupboards against damp external walls. If a white bloom appears, wipe it off with a barely damp cloth and dry in shade before conditioning.
Conditioning
Use a neutral, solvent-free leather conditioner two to four times a year — more in dry northern winters, less in coastal humidity. Test on a hidden area first, apply sparingly, and stop when the leather stops absorbing. Over-conditioning softens the structure and dulls the burnish.
What to avoid
Direct sun on a car dashboard, hair dryers and heaters, alcohol-based wipes, saddle soap on burnished edges, and any leather spray labelled for chrome-tanned or coated leather. Ink, perfume and hand sanitiser stain immediately and permanently.
Engraved surfaces
Gold foil and blind deboss need no special care; simply avoid scrubbing across the impression. Laser engraving is burnt into the grain and will not fade, though it softens visually as the surrounding leather darkens.
